Who can help with your greenhouse project

Fertile Land’s own advisory team is not taking new enquiries. If you are planning, building or running a glasshouse or indoor farm in the United Kingdom, the organisations below are the ones that actually pick up the phone: government advice lines, grower associations, research centres, regulators and the bodies that administer grants. None of them charges for a first conversation, and most of the guidance they publish is free.

Every entry was checked against the organisation’s own website on the date shown. Numbers and addresses do change — if one no longer works, the website link is the place to look for the current one.

• Free, general advice on a farming or horticultural business — Farming Advice Service (England), Farm Advisory Service (Scotland), Farming Connect (Wales).
• Energy, climate control, crop research — the AHDB knowledge library and GrowSave, Stockbridge Technology Centre, Warwick Crop Centre, NIAB.
• Grants for equipment and productivity — Rural Payments Agency (Farming Investment Fund rounds are announced there).
• Water abstraction, pesticides — Environment Agency, HSE Chemicals Regulation Division.
• Peers growing the same crops — the grower associations for tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers, protected ornamentals, and the Lea Valley.
• Hard times — Farming Community Network and RABI run confidential helplines.
